Podcasting- Listening Your Way to Being Informed.
Well here it is a blog about podcasting. I know a little ironic but don’t have the capability to do a podcast right now, so we will take the written word way out. For me it is funny to hear people say “Why podcast of vodcast?” This is funny because it is like asking why is TV popular or why is the Radio popular. They are popular because they work better for more people. You are more likely to be engaged to a moving image or sound than trying to read something for yourself. Another major point that really goes along with this is that podcasting allows for time shifts and spacial shifts while listening to the cast. You listen or watch these on your own time, you can also watch them on the go with a portable multimedia device.
So now this comes down to, what does this do for me? Honestly nothing much, but I love podcast and vodcast. I currently have my Ipod set to download several different podcast and vodcast that I listen to and watch in my down times at work and school. That right there should be enough to get most people believing in podcasting and vodcasting. Lisa Hartwell hit it right on the nail head when she stated “It’s easier to communicate through audio and video than through the written word, and listeners tend to absorb and retain more information this way.” I want to state here that I love to read, and do read on a very regular bases. Yet, I cannot get all the information that I need or that is coming to me by reading. There are not enough hours in the day.
Once again, I am going back to my central tenet about Web 2.0 and becoming the collective of human knowledge. Podcast and Vodcast are a way of getting that information from the ether. It is like checking a book out from the library and taking it with you until you are done. Only you don’t have to give it back and everybody can get a copy. The uses for these tools are pretty limitless. Teachers, doctors, professionals, and a host of other people are able to get there knowledge and experience out there to help the rest of us out.
So, once again how does this make me feel. It makes me feel great…….I love podcast and vodccast. The only problem I see is having to decide when to podcast, vodcast, or blog. I feel that there is a need for each, not every blog out there will translate into the other mediums and vice versa. That is why all three are still popular today. There are times when you want to feel and convay the emotion that only a podcast can do, then there are times when you need to show people the information and here comes the vodcast to help you out with that. Yet, there are times when the written word can be much more powerful. This is why I belive that it is esential to understand and use all three.
Podcasting and Vodcasting are an esential part of the web 2.0 movement. We are living in an infomration based world and people are having to move faster and faster to get everything done. How do we stay atop everything with this constant movement? If you haven’t figured it out by now then you ahven’t been reading very well…

You really made a great point!! I love to read too, but I can’t learn something by just reading. I need to see and hear it. I mostly read fiction, and I have an awesome imagination, so the pictures I see are pretty detailed, but when I am trying to read a book on how to program in PHP, with no pictures, Im lost! That is where the detail oriented part of my brain kicks in and says “HEY you’re missing something, something BIG!”. I guess that’s one of the reasons I love the online training CBT classes & of course Lynda.com.
I love how you end with the “you havent been reading very well” when this blog is about a sort of alternitive way of reading. your blog is very similar to mine. Its crazy to think that all this is tied into eachother and most of this was not even around a while back, now its like we take it for granted bc we are around it so much and dont really realize or grasp the value of things like this
I can relate to what your saying, although lately being a college student i really dont watch TV as much as i do the radio, and vodcasting is seeming to get more and more popular via youtube!! I am starting to use Blogging and Vodcasting more to promote my small web internet business!! I hope to advertise my ideas and concepts through these features!! But must admit, I dont like to read that much, writing yes, but for some strange odd reason, i much prefer to listen!! I liked alot of valid points that you brought up in your blog, it got my thoughts on where blogs, pods, and vods play in our society. How long do you think it will take before our society uses these features with education as a added tool for learning??
In accordance with J, I don’t like to read either. Not to mention there are a lot of people who simply don’t have the time to sit down and read something, and they opt to listen. And for others it’s more of a personal preference. I definitely agree that one type of medium works better for some, and may not work well for others and vice versa. I just think it’s amazing that things have evolved so far that we have a choice as to how to receive our information. Not to mention, it makes things fun!
